Review of the Delonghi KG 89 Coffee Bean Grinder February 20 2017
Are you looking to buy a coffee grinder in Singapore? Traditionally, instant coffee and coffee powder have been the popular way to make our cup of coffee but coffee from fresh coffee beans are increasing in popularity with coffee drinkers in Singapore.
Now, if you want to make coffee using coffee beans, you're going to need a grinder. For those of you with a fully automatic coffee machine, the machine comes with an in-built grinder so buying a stand-alone one isn't necessary. If you're looking to make cold-brew coffee, Turkish coffee or coffee with a french-press / moka pot, then you'll need to buy a separate coffee bean grinder. We've previously written about burr grinders vs blade grinders, so we won't go into that here. Instead, this article will focus on the actual coffee bean grinder we use ourselves, the De'Longhi KG89 Grinder, and why we recommend it.
Main features of the KG 89 Grinder
- Burr grinder produces ground coffee with a consistent texture.
- Quantity control knob allows you to choose between 2-12 cups of coffee.
- 3 grind settings - coarse, medium and fine with in-between settings to allow you yo get the perfect grind.
- The transparent ground coffee container allows you to access the ground coffee easily.
- Safety feature automatically shuts the grinder down if the lid or ground coffee container is not securely in place.
- Easy to use on/off button.
Compact (5 x 6.3 x 10.1 inch) and stylish, the De'Longhi KG 89 grinder will be a terrific addition to any kitchen.
The De'Longhi KG 89 in Daily Use
Although we have the De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM 22.360 fully automatic espresso machine as our go-to device when we want a quick cup of coffee, we also prepare Turkish coffee, cold-brew coffee and french-press coffee at least three times per week. This is when we turn to the KG89, which is able to get the fine grind for the Turkish coffee, medium-coarse grind for the cold-brew and coarse grind for the french-press just right.
Quietness of the De'Longhi KG 89
The KG89 is also relatively quiet, as far as grinders go. Just comparing it with the grinder in-built in our fully automatic machine and you can really note the difference in how much quieter it is. Good news if you don't want to wake everybody in the house up when you grind your coffee beans.
Durability of the De'Longhi KG 89
We've been using our KG 89 grinder for close to two years and it's still going strong. We clean it after every use and as long as you clean it consistently, you should be able to use it for years without any decrease in the consistency of the grind.
Drawbacks of the KG 89 Grinder
It would be remiss of us not to mention the drawbacks of this grinder. As is to be expected from any grinder with plastic parts, there's a slight static cling. Also, some of the ground coffee may stick to the container and you'll need a brush or spoon to remove it. These are minor inconveniences that are there with many other grinders as well.
Final thoughts on the KG 89 coffee bean grinder
We couldn't be happier with our KG 89, which is why we're recommending it. It fits perfectly in our kitchen and the pros definitely outweigh the cons with this one. It is also a good step-up for anyone using a manual grinder or blade grinder, without being prohibitively expensive.
